What are plugs? Plugs are plants grown in 72-cell trays; each soil plug is 1.6” wide x 3.2” deep. They are a great option for planting large gardens. We plant all of our own projects with plugs.
Indian Paintbrush has bright red blooms in late spring. It’s a short plant that really pops in a spring garden. It’s a semi-parasitic plant that gets some resources from the roots of surrounding plants (each plug or pot of Indian Paintbrush will have Blue Grama Grass growing along with it as a host.
It’s a biennial and only lives for 2 years. The plants you are buying are first year seedlings. They will stay in a low rosette and put down roots their first year, and then the second year they will flower in May or June. After that, they can spread by seed, which will take another year to sprout, and another year after that to flower.
We recommend reading “The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush” by Tomie dePaola for an illustrated story of the flower.
