One of the best sedges for rain gardens, Fox Sedge can handle temporary flooding and long periods of dryness. It can even handle a normal garden, without any extra water. It forms dense clumps with fine, mounding leaves. Every sunny rain garden needs some Fox Sedge scattered throughout. In large rain gardens, Fox Sedge can form a groundcover when planted throughout a garden, either alone or among flowers. Fox Sedge plugs can provide the groundcover, and taller flowers such as March Milkweed, New England Aster, and Ironweed can rise above and provide more pollinator value.
It has a very utilitarian role in rain gardens and wetlands—sending out a vast, fibrous root system that allows water to soak into the ground and allows the leaves to evapotranspirate water. The leaves mat down in the late summer and fall, reducing weed germination.
