Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) 12-pack of plugs
Can be shipped.
***12-pack MINIMUM ORDER***: If ordering 12-packs, you must order *at least six 12-packs*. You can mix and match 12-packs of different species.
What are plugs? Plugs are plants grown in 72-cell trays; each soil plug is 1.6” wide x 3.2” deep. They are a great option for planting large gardens. We plant all of our own projects with plugs.
An iconic tallgrass prairie species, Big Bluestem grows close to 7 feet tall. Big Bluestem grass has beautiful blue and bronze color tones in late summer that make it an eye catching plant in gardens and restorations. It needs full sun to thrive, and once established, is incredibly hardy.
Details
Perennial
Sun: Full Sun, Part Shade
Moisture: Dry, Medium, Medium-Wet
Height: 7 feet
Blooms: June, July, Aug, Sept
Color: Bronze, Tan
Spacing: 2-3′
Spreads: 5” a year by roots; a lot by seed
Zones: 3-9
Benefits: Butterflies, Pollinators, Deer Resistant
Design Tips
Big Bluestem is tall, so plant it with other tall plants or scatter it in-between shorter flowers and grasses. Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) can become aggressive over time, spreading by seed or slowly by underground rhizomes (roots)–so be careful when putting it in gardens that have shorter species, are close to paths, or close to houses.
Maintenance Tips
Big Bluestem spreads readily by seed in gardens and restorations, which is part of the reason it was a main component of the tall grass prairie spreading thousands of miles. If you don’t want it to become the main component of your garden, you can remove the seed heads in early fall when they have finished maturing (and giving color to your garden), but before they have started to drop.
Great native plant choice for the Minnesota Lawns to Legumes grant program!
Companion Plants
Pale Purple Coneflower
Rattlesnake Master
Wild Bergamot
Joe Pye Weed
Yellow Coneflower
Compass Plant
Size: 12-pack of plugs
