Winged Loosestrife is a little known native plant but one that grows excellent in gardens, blooming in mid-summer with a burst of small purple flowers. It’s usually a short plant and grows to about 2 feet high. Winged Loosestrife is most commonly found in wet meadows but does well in black soils that don’t get much water, either.
This is not the same plant as the invasive purple loosestrife.

Winged Loosestrife (Lythrum alatum) grows in a dense ball almost like a short shrub. Plant it with other late summer blooming natives with similar habitats such as Prairie Loosestrife, Culver’s Root, and Great Blue Lobelia.
Great native plant choice for the Minnesota Lawns to Legumes grant program!
