Wild Petunia is a pretty little flower that is notorious for spreading in gardens by seed. Start with one plant, end with hundreds. It has light purple flowers and small branching foliage. The seed pods explode and spread seed many feet away from the original plant, and new seedlings end up where you don’t expect it! We recommend this for wild style gardens or prairie restorations.

Design Tips

Wild Petunia spreads a lot by seed, which can be a benefit in wild gardens with lower maintenance. They will provide a thick understory of 1 foot tall plants underneath taller, larger plants. It might not be the best choice around small plants like Prairie Smoke, Pasque Flower, or others. You probably won’t be able to keep this one in check, so make sure to plant it in a garden where you are OK with it spreading everywhere.

Great native plant choice for the Minnesota Lawns to Legumes grant program!
